COVID-19 and Mask Policy

Please know that our health measures are in accordance with guidance from the Tri-County Health Department (TCHD), Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). All of these agencies strongly recommend that schools take a layered approach to mitigating the transmission of COVID-19 as much as possible. This means using multiple mitigation measures layered on top of one another to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Of course, public health guidance may change quickly and frequently depending on circumstances, so please be assured that we will share information with you as quickly as possible. We thank you in advance for your flexibility, understanding and support.

COVID-19 Vaccination The most significant layer to prevent transmission of COVID-19 is for as many people in the APS community to receive COVID-19 vaccines as possible. AXL Academy's Board voted to mirror the APS policy: once the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants full approval of a COVID-19 vaccine, all AXL staff will be required to be vaccinated.

We are also strongly encouraging all students who are eligible (ages 12 and up) to get vaccinated. Vaccines must be proven to be safe and effective before they are administered to the general public. After examining clinical trial data, the FDA found that three vaccines are safe and effective at preventing severe COVID-19 disease: Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). The FDA authorized the Pfizer vaccine for people 12 years and older and authorized Moderna and Janssen for those 18 years and older. For more information about receiving your FREE vaccine at an upcoming APS vaccine clinic, please visit: aurorak12.org/vaccine. Please know that you do not need to be a U.S. citizen to receive a vaccine and you are not required to provide proof of identification. Face Masks August 9 Update: The Board of Directors has voted to require masks for all staff, scholars and visitors indoors. Verified vaccinated staff may remove masks when scholars are not present. All visitors must remain masked at all times.

Meet the Principal | August 11

Our new Principal, Noah Tonk, is eager to meet our families, introduce himself and his background, and learn more about our families and their priorities and goals for the year. Please plan to attend a meeting on August 11 (Orientation Day) at AXL Academy at 11:30am in the cafeteria or on Zoom at 5:30pm.

Kindergarten Screening

We are so excited to welcome your “Owlets” to join our community of AXL Academy Owls! As a new AXL Owl, your scholar will learn about how school works, necessary academic skills to succeed, and skills for positive social interaction. Because our teachers work hard to provide every scholar with exactly what they need, we always schedule time for our Kindergarten teachers to meet their new “Owlets” and learn about each scholar in order to develop a clear plan for success for each child. Our Kindergarten screenings are mandatory and will take approximately 30 minutes of your time. During this screening time, we ask that you remain on campus and available to assist if it should be needed by the teacher. We have scheduled our screenings for Monday, August 16 and Tuesday, August 17 from 9am-2pm. Please check in with the main office to sign up for a time.

Parent FAQs

Will my scholar have free breakfast and lunch?

  • Yes! We are happy to announce this will be covered again for this academic year. However, school lunch forms are very important.

Do I need to fill out the lunch form?

  • Yes! While you won't be needing to load a balance for your scholar, this information will determine the amount of your annual registration fee, helps the district receive grants and helps provide free meals. To fill it out: https://payschoolscentral.com/#/user/login

Rosters

  • We will have all rosters posted during Orientation Day. Please review the teacher and feel free to stop in to meet the teacher and drop off school supplies prior to the first day of school.

Class Dojo

  • Class Dojo is the school's preferred way to share announcements, share scholar work and ensure parents/guardians have a direct way to communicate with teachers. You will be receiving an invite to join the class dojo crew for your scholar(s).

Dress Code

  • AXL Academy's dress code has been updated to permit navy blue or grey shirts without the AXL logo. Navy blue or grey shirts with the AXL logo are still a part of the dress code. We will be giving out 1 free AXL navy blue shirt for each scholar at Orientation Day. For more information regarding dress code, please visit: https://www.axlacademy.org/dress-code

Field Work

  • Field work is a core principle for expeditionary learning and we will continue having field work with adherence with all guidelines to ensure safety for our scholars. We cannot wait to discover trigonometry on a hike with our scholars, become a paleontologist by uncovering dinosaur fossils and open up an AXL restaurant to learn business skills. This may change to stay aligned with guidelines from the CDC, CDPHE and Tri-County Health, but we remain committed in delivering expeditionary learning that engages, empowers and achieves.
