AXL’s Revolution in Learning AXL is a new college-preparatory charter school in Aurora, serving students from preschool through 8th grade. AXL prepares students to create their own futures with an ambitious, language-enriched education in a safe and stimulating environment. We believe that all students deserve an outstanding education including both the challenges and the supports to prepare for college. AXL is located in central Aurora in one of the most diverse areas of the city socioeconomically, linguistically, racially, and culturally. AXL opens in August 2008 with 240 students in grades K-5. At maximum enrollment, AXL will enroll 80 students per grade level. The school delivers high academic achievement, character development, and social equity through an active pedagogy and a strong school culture. We call it a Revolution in Learning. Key features of AXL’s revolutionary approach include: College Preparation AXL provides excellent teachers to guide and support each student in meeting high expectations for achievement. This is possible with our ongoing, high quality professional development. Active Teaching & Learning
All of our curriculum begins with Colorado Content Standards, but we go beyond them to involve students actively and meaningfully in the larger community. Teachers use a variety of evaluation tools — including Colorado-mandated tests, nationally standardized tests, authentic assessments of students’ knowledge and skills, and portfolios of students’ work over time — to monitor students’ progress toward world class standards of achievement. Performance data from these assessments drive AXL’s ongoing curriculum development, training for teachers, and individualized supports for students’ learning. Students publicly demonstrate what they have learned and what they can do, in developmentally appropriate ways, in order to earn passage from to next grade level. Strong School Culture
For example, staff and students alike adhere to a Code of Conduct that creates an inclusive and responsive learning environment. Students are organized into separate divisions for girls and boys, each tailored to support academic achievement using the same curriculum. Students loop with the same team of teachers for more than one year, which helps build trust and caring relationships and challenge each student effectively. AXL students wear simple uniforms to ensure respect for self and others, diminish social stress, and develop a shared community identity. Our prek-8 model provides a safe, stable, and nurturing school in which students know what is expected of them academically and personally and know they have the individualized support to reach their goals. Extended Schedule Meaningful Relationships AXL’s student population reflects the richness of culture, ethnicity, language, and socio-economics of Aurora. The school’s diversity creates an environment in which students can learn from one another, learn to respect one another, and develop the skills needed for success in a diverse world. |
