AXL is a college-preparatory charter school in Aurora, serving students from prekindergarten through 8th grade. AXL prepares students to create their own futures with an ambitious, language-enriched education in a safe and stimulating environment. We believe that all students deserve an outstanding education including both the challenges and the supports to prepare for college.

AXL is located in central Aurora in one of the most diverse areas of the city socioeconomically, linguistically, racially, and culturally. AXL opened in August 2008 with 240 students in grades K-5. At maximum enrollment, AXL will enroll 80 students per grade level. The school delivers high academic achievement, character development, and social equity through an active pedagogy and a strong school culture. We call it a Revolution in Learning.

AXL engages students in a challenging curriculum where all core subjects, as well as technology, fine arts, physical fitness, and Spanish, are integrated into deep investigations of real-world issues. We call these Learning Expeditions, and they are built directly from Colorado Content Standards and inspired by Expeditionary Learning Schools, and they connect classroom content with everyday life. Students are grouped in single-gender classrooms that loop with the same team of teachers for two years. Girls and boys eat, play at recess, attend school assemblies, conduct fieldwork, and participate in other coeducational programming together.

Staff and students alike adhere to a Code of Character that creates an inclusive and responsive learning environment. The school day runs from 8:00am to 4:00pm (8:00am to 1:00pm on Wednesdays) with before and after school opportunities. AXL operates on an extended year calendar, with breaks between trimesters, rather than one long summer break, to ensure that all students achieve and maintain adequate yearly progress. Students wear simple uniforms to demonstrate respect for themselves and others.

Students are assessed frequently against explicit learning targets to measure their progress toward Colorado Content Standards through standardized tests, value-added growth measures, teacher-developed instruments, and student portfolios. AXL tests both students’ increasing knowledge and skills, as well as their ability to integrate and apply them to solve real world problems. Student performance data drive continuous curriculum and teacher development.
